shopping - Spring Skincare 2016

Spring has finally reached Vancouver, 6 months of uncomfortable weather is behind us, and while I'm ready to break out the dresses and put my parka into storage, my wardrobe isn't the only thing that changes during the sunny months. My skincare routine gets updated, and new products are put into rotation.

1) SPF, SPF, SPF! I have vivid memories of my fair skinned mother slathering sunscreen on my nose, and my protests were met with "You'll thank me when you're older". As an adult, I can say that among the many things I have my mother to thank for, the constant use of sunscreen is one of them. SPF should be worn year-round, so this may not be news to some of you SPF devotees, but being able to see the sun now should be your reminder to apply sunscreen everyday. The formula's of sunscreens are improving every year, there's no excuse for not incorporating it into your routine. I usually apply it with my makeup and take it in my bag with me for the day, and spray myself with an aerosol over my arms and legs heading out the door.

2) Self Tan and Maintenance: While I try to regularly warm up my skin with a self tan here and there during the winter, it turns into a weekly routine once the sun is out. Giving yourself the perfect tan takes practice, but self tanners have become easier than ever to use. I usually begin my routine with an exfoliant in the shower, light lotion around my elbows, knees, and ankles, and a mousse tanner with a mitt. I've found that mousse seems to be the quickest option, though it may not be the best for beginners, so I would recommend trying out a gradual lotion to begin with, to really see where the tanner is going when you're applying it (I tend to mess up most around my biceps and ankles). As for maintenance, applying a gradual tanner or a light lotion once you've achieved your ideal shade keeps up the colour without an entire routine.

3) Dealing with oily skin and blemishes: We all sweat during the increasing heat of the spring, and even the weather change alone can cause my combination skin to break out in not-so-flattering places. Little bumps below my neck on my back and sometimes on my chest start to appear during these months. With all my spring clothes showing off these areas, I've found a way to combat this. Daily showering is a given, but keeping inexpensive baby wipes with me has worked wonders. When I'm home to change from work into something for dinner, I don't always have the time to shower, and giving these areas a quick pat with a baby wipe keeps my skin from getting irritated and producing pimples. It sounds a little gross, but I'd rather deal with any blemishes before they appear instead of having to cover them up when they do.

4) Shaving in the Spring: Nothing boosts my self esteem like shaved, tanned legs in a sun dress. Personally, I don't like waiting for my hair to grow between waxes and shaving is most inexpensive for. I prep my skin with a foamy body wash, and then get to shaving my legs. In a pinch, a foamy body wash helps me see where I've shaved if I don't have time to apply a gel. In the spring, I switch to five blades to go all out, the little luxury of using a new five blade razor will always thrill me. I don't stay on a regular routine for switching them out, but going over the same area to get a smooth shave usually indicates it's time for new blades. Following up a shave with a self tan routine (including lotions) keeps my skin from drying out and my tan from fading away. Dollar Shave Club provides anywhere from 2 blade to 6 blade razors monthly, from $3.50 to $9.50, respectively. Shaving has got to be one of the most expensive additions to my routine, but with services like Dollar Shave Club, I won't need to worry about running to the drugstore before an event or birthday. More information on the service and the various options of blades are available at https://www.dollarshaveclub.com/blades. Having all I need to maintain smooth legs showing up at my door over the course of the summer is one less thing to worry about.

Spring has got to be the best time of the year for beauty products, there seems to be more innovation, better variety of products, and I find that I better stick to my skincare routine when I start showing more skin. With all of these products at your disposal, it won't be hard to have your best spring yet!
